Zig Zag and Log Cabin

Hey everyone...since the end of February is approaching fast we should be finishing up our zig zag and log cabin squares so our slates will be clean for the March tutorial.  If any of you need any help just give a holler and someone will be able to walk you through it.  If you have finished your square please post a picture.

Happy quilting everyone.

Student Log Cabins!

Inspired by our quilt block of the month, I decided to have my students make one too! They did a great job considering we used scraps in the classroom. Hope you enjoy the pictures!

Log Cabin Square

Mardie,
I can answer that question for you.  I didn't pay attention on my first square and did all my strips different colors.  It turned out okay but didn't have the "log cabin" look.  Here is the square:
I like my second one better than this one.
Connie, I have a question or 2 about the log cabin square:

1. Do you want any certain color scheme?

2. It seems that the light side is [strips 1&2 "same-same"] then [strips 3&4 "same-same"] but the dark side is strips all mixed up. Is that the pattern you would like? Light side more uniform, with the dark side mixed up?

Does that make sense?

Thanks, Mardie

Marnita's Log Cabin Square

Connie Lynne, I have finished your log cabin square.  I'm sure you will be awe struck upon seeing it for the first time (she was actually here when I did it).

Here it is:
Since you were so kind to me and didn't laugh when I completely messed up the first square, I will air mail this one to you.  Basically it means I'm going to toss across the room to you since you are at my house right now.
Just a tip to all:  I didn't read the instructions carefully and did not cut 2 two pieces of the same color when doing the lighter strips.  Needless to say it turned out a little wonky!

My Diddy Kong

I love this boy. Courtney's son, my nephew, Connor- 8 year old spitfire....like his mama ;) This boy loves him some Donkey and Diddy Kong. Any of you that may have little boys know them of the Nintendo persuasion. But Connor LOVES monkeys, period- but especially the Kong's. Anyway..I happened along these on the internet..and I thought they were funny- and a little boy's OR girl's dream. In case you were wondering..that's Mario, Princess Peach, and Donkey Kong. You could even do these on a smaller scale like a pillow. I think it's cool because it proves that quilting is versatile- it's not just windmills and baskets-which are great- but you can come up with anything.

So..Courtney, I think Connor really needs a Donkey Kong quilt. Why don't you get on that, and get started? (((wink))) HA!

Connie,
So how many different pieces of fabric will we be needing for your square? Looks like Marnita has 5 but I can't tell from your picture.
Mardie

Hey Ya'll! How you Do-rin?

Hello Ladies! I'm Nikki, and oh so excited to be a part of this group! A bit about me...I have a degree in Theatre and work as a costume designer/technician. I freelanced to sundry places and theatres around, until I found my home and settled down at the AR Arts Center Children's Theatre. I absolutely love it. After working really hard on a show, one of the best things is to sneak into the audience and hear the kids reaction to the show. Makes it all worth it.
I also have two pups that I love, love- a toy poodle and Bichon Frise- Arlie and Mia. I'm definitely a dog person and can't stand to watch those ASPCA commercials. I want to save all the dogs! But not in a creepy way....right? ;) I love to craft- I learned my way around a hot glue gun at a young, young age...shout out to my mama right here....She was always hot gluing something on a hairclip. Or a piece of wood. I knit, forge and make jewelry, scrapbook, decoupage, all of that fun stuff that I love to do, but rarely have the time to devote to all of it. Which brings me to Trading Pieces! I'm so excited to do this, because let's face it, quilts have gotten hip! With all the fantastic fabric out there, there's so many possibilities..whew...my heart beats fast just thinking about it...I love this idea, because I can make a square a month- we can all make time for that, and someone gets a lovely quilt in the end! I do have to be honest though...I usually skipped mutual the nights we learned about quilting. I wanted nothing to do with such a "mom" skill. HA! If I could see me now...I know I spend most of my days sewing for work, but I'm producing things like this:

So...Things like this:

scare me a bit. SO MANY pieces! So many straight lines!! So much precision!!! People are looking at it close up! But I'm ready and excited for the challenge. It's been good for me thus far...dare I say it's a bit addicting?!
Well..that about sums me up. Again, so excited to have started this venture and to have my mom and sister by my side- and to get the chance to get to know all of you a bit better. Fun Times. Yeah...this is long...sorry ;)

Here's my first official quilting attempt, for you, Jennifer!

I fell in love with the racing vintage police cars and old timey microphones ringing out "Calling all Cars!" Reminded me of a bunch of little boys ;)
Log Cabin Quilt Squares

YAY!!!   It's my turn!!!

For my quilt I would like log cabin squares.  (Tuturial to follow).   This will be a "scrappy" quilt where you can use what you have on hand or find some fun fabric to work with.
Now, I have to go cut strips for my log cabin.

Connie's fabric for the log cabin quilt square.

Marnita's fabric for the log cabin quilt square.

Oops. Should have said, "dropped off at the Post Office."
(Must proof read things better.)
Enjoy.
Jennifer S.
I just dropped off Kristin B's and my squares. (Whoa, that was a hard sentence for good grammar... tenses.) Anyway, as they say in Quilting circles, "The Squares are in the Mail!" Hope you like them.

Introducing: Purple

Okay this is getting a little annoying. I've typed this 3 times and I keep making it disappear, so I'll not go into any more of an explanation, in fear of loosing it again. I'm ready for the next one.

Better late than never.......introducing: Llewellyn

I have put this off as long as I could, but now I have to introduce myself. I am the wife of an awesome husband, Terry. The mom of an indredible son, Chris, who lights up my life everyday.
I also have three beautiful and talented daughters, Heidi, Courtney and Nikki. Then there are the 6 grandchildren, that I can't say enough about. All these people make up my greatest assests.

I love being with my friends and laughing, scrapbooking, quilting and just hanging out. I'm so excited about our quilting group. It gives me the opportunity to get to know new friends and know others, better and watch my two daughters, learn a new skill.

One more thing you should know about me.....I love my curly haired, four legged, 50 lb. poodle named, Elly. I'm never alone. She is always right beside me. It is like having a two year old follow you around.

I guess I have taken up enough of the blog space. I'll attach the photo of my square, if I can figure it out. :)
I have often wondered why I am always the oldest one in the group, but don't worry, I promise not to act my age.

Aren't these cute? We are so proud of ourselves. Whew!

Now, where do we send these? We need an address.

Hi, It's Me, Lara.

EIGHT is the number of chocolates I need to even begin to feel satisfied!
NINE to FIVE are normal working hours, but I'm lucky enough to be a teacher and only be there 8-3:15. I love my job and teaching Parenting, Human Relations, and Clothing (yikes!)
and TEN things you may not know about me: 1. I am terrified of heights 2. I have a blog at www.mackelberries.blogspot.com 3. I had a student put off a stink bomb in my room 4. I am too relaxed in my discipline as a parent and a teacher 4. I served a LDS mission in southern Brazil.

P.S. My yellow Zig-Zag is posted in Jennifer S.'s post, so I won't bother posting it. It was a fun one to start with!

February Block

Connie Tollett will be choosing the February block. I hear it might be an updated version of the log cabin!  She will have tutorial on the blog soon...She refuses to be felled by all the work and planning from her statistics class.
