Mardie's "Scrappy Star"

Here is my "Scrappy Star" square. It is a variation on a "crazy quilt" pattern. (I followed a website very closely, but it has since become corrupted. I will forward a copy of the original tutorial through our facebook group or our blog.)

1. 12.5 " finished block size
2. All seams are 1/4"
3. Please choose BRIGHT fabric scraps for the star.
4. I will be sending templates to you for making the BRIGHT "kite" pieces as well as for the Black and White polka dot "triangle" pieces.
5. I will also be sending the Black and White polka dot fabric to you.

Step #1: Gather your BRIGHT scraps together. This is a great opportunity to use up some of your scraps. As you can see from the picture below, the scraps are sewn together any way you choose. YOU are making the fabric for the BRIGHT stars! Have fun with this. You will need a piece or pieces big enough to cut out 4 "tie" or "kite" shaped pieces (about 12" X 5" or so for each "kite"). Most of my chained pieces ended up being about 13" X 16". The scraps need to be at least 1" X 1" to be usable. Most of mine were larger. Start chaining smaller scraps together until you have a "fabric" piece that is around 13" X 16".

When you have sewn your scrap "fabric" pieces, press all the seams.

Step #2: Lay Template "A" on your fabric and carefully cut around it. You don't want to cut the template, as this will cause the template to get smaller! Cut 4 of Template "A" out of your scrappy fabric.

You should now have four "kites" like these below.

Step #3: Lay Template "B" on your Black and White polka dot fabric. Carefully cut out 8 triangles.

Step #4: Each 12.5" block is made of 4 smaller blocks. You will complete each block before you put all of them together. Each small block consists of one Bright "kite" and 2 polka dot triangles.

With right sides together, place a polka dot triangle on a Bright kite piece as shown in the picture below. The triangle will overlap the kite just a bit at both ends. This is ok. Sew as shown, then repeat on the other side of the Bright kite piece. When you press it open, you have one of the squares!

Repeat 3 more times until you have 4 squares.

Step #5: With right sides together, matching seams, sew 2 squares together as shown below. Then repeat with the other 2 squares. With right sides together, matching seams, sew the 2 larger rectangles together forming the star.

You should now have one 12.5" finished square!

Press well. Please do not trim the square.

Here is what the squares look like when they are put together. The polka dot pieces form their own designs as well. I love it and can't wait to get more to put this together.

Thanks!
Love, Mardie
